Wearable 4D Millimeter-Wave Radar System for Firefighters

Customer: Advanced Fire Equipment Company
Project: Wearable 4D Millimeter-Wave Radar System for Firefighters
Product Description
Syntronic partnered with a leading fire equipment manufacturer to design and develop a 60GHz wearable 4D millimeter-wave radar system that enhances firefighter safety in extreme, low-visibility conditions. The system was engineered to provide real-time situational awareness by detecting obstacles and survivors through dense smoke and intense heat, which are conditions where traditional vision and sensors fail.
By combining deep expertise in radar technology, embedded software, PCB design, and systems engineering, Syntronic enabled the customer to create a next-generation wearable solution that is both lightweight and robust enough to perform reliably in life-threatening firefighting environments.
Scope
As an engineering and prototype development partner, Syntronic assumed full responsibility for the design, integration, and validation of the 60GHz radar system. The engagement included embedded software and firmware development, systems design, high-frequency PCB layout, EMC/ESD design, DFM (Design For Manufacturing) and simulated fire field testing to ensure the product could withstand the toughest operational conditions.
Syntronic engineers miniaturized the radar frontend while optimizing antenna array design for maximum signal penetration through smoke and high-temperature environments. Advanced signal processing algorithms were developed to filter interference from heat, vapor, and metallic surfaces, ensuring precise detection and stability in harsh environments.
The team also created a ruggedized mechanical enclosure with integrated thermal management capable of protecting sensitive electronics at temperatures exceeding 500°C. Extensive fire field simulations were conducted to validate performance, refine reliability, and ensure the radar would operate effectively when firefighters depend on it most.
Results
The collaboration resulted in a functional, field-tested prototype that demonstrated exceptional reliability and accuracy in simulated fire conditions. The 4D radar system achieved over 95% detection accuracy for obstacles and survivors in zero-visibility scenarios, providing firefighters with enhanced awareness and safety in critical operations.
Battery optimization extended operational time to 6 hours of continuous use, while weight reductions made the device comfortable for prolonged wear without impeding mobility. The prototype successfully passed all environmental and durability tests, proving its readiness for future large-scale production and deployment.
Key outcomes included:
- 95% detection accuracy in dense smoke and heat conditions
- 6 hours of continuous operation per charge
- Significant weight reduction for improved wearability
- Validated reliability through simulated fire field testing
By choosing Syntronic, the customer accelerated the development of a life-saving technology that sets a new benchmark for firefighter safety. Syntronic’s multidisciplinary expertise and integrated engineering approach enabled rapid innovation, robust validation, ready for volume manufacturing, and a scalable foundation for next-generation firefighting equipment.
