Reducing the environmental impact of electronic products through software optimizations

In accordance with our environmental goals our company wants to reduce the impact that our products have on the environment.

When developing electronic products we consider the following:

  • The choice of material and choice of supplier
  • Transports of components
  • Energy efficiency
  • The possibility of recycling the products
  • Lifespan of the products

This raises a question if the electronics can also become more environmentally friendly and energy efficient through the software running on it?

How close to the hardware is the software and at that level, can the software regulate energy efficiency by regulating power consumption? Can we affect the clock speed of our processors so that the power consumption decreases? Can we choose which processor cores to use? Can we improve the energy efficiency purely from more thoughtful code? What is the economic and environmental cost for these considerations and efforts?

This thesis work would be a case study and use examples if and how this can be done in our workflow from designing the product to the end of its life cycle.

For a successful thesis work, we believe that the applicants should have:

  • Experience in industry-standard programming languages (Python/Java/C#/C/C++).
