Proper Logging Practices in Industry Scale Applications.

Description of the thesis proposal:

In order to troubleshoot large applications effectively it is essential to have good logging in place. The trick is to determine what a reasonable amount of logging is, and to give all the essential information while not overdoing it.

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate different ways of logging and find an optimal solution. This could be done in different ways:

  • Investigate different methods and tools used in logging, and weigh the pros against the cons.
  • Determine what amount of logging is acceptable and needed for different purposes.
  • Determine how to adapt logging level based on the intended user group.

An overview of the thesis work could be:

  • Research current logging tools and technologies and measure their performance to determine an optimal solution.
  • Develop a small-scale application on which you can apply different ways of thinking concerning logging.
  • Present the work to a reference group for verification.

For a successful thesis work, we believe that the applicants should have:

  • Experience in programming
  • Interest in logging/troubleshooting.
  • Experience in different logging tools/methods.
