Being able to determine the position and orientation of an item using an image processing algorithm could have many possible applications, one of which is in the automatic testing of electronic products.

When testing electronic products, there are many advantages to a fully automatic tester. The tester will pick up the Device Under Test from a tray, place it in a test chamber and automatically test it, then pick it back up and place it on a PASS or FAIL tray depending on the test results. These fully automated testers can (unlike human-operated testers) work 24/7 and require very little monitoring and human oversight. This lack of monitoring can, however, lead to unwanted outcomes.

When using automated testers like this, it is of great importance to assure the objects are being placed correctly on the trays by the tester, as to avoid the tester making errors due to misplaced objects. This can lead to damaged machinery, damaged objects and at worst, total breakdown.

Because of this, it would be preferable if the tester had some way of determining if the objects have been placed correctly on the trays, or if some mistake has happened along the way. This is where an image processing system capable of “looking” at the tray would be useful. Such an algorithm could be used to occasionally scan the trays for misplaced objects, and in the case of a misplaced object, halt the test sequence and alert an operator.

Goal of thesis:

The main goal of this thesis is not necessarily to make a working system, but rather to develop a prototype and determine the reliability and accuracy of such a system.
