AI training in simulated environments

Description of the thesis proposal:

One of the biggest thresholds of machine learning and AI is the gathering and storage of good data to train and evaluate the models on. The graphical fidelity of current generation computer games and/or simulation software should be good enough to at least a degree replaces recorded live data.

Use simulators to explore the feasibility of using simulated data to train machine learning algorithms and evaluating it on gathered real world data. Use the existing Carla simulator to train an ML algorithm to recognize objects, in this case cars, and then compare the results with either live video stream data or other open-source data sets.

An overview of the thesis work would be:

• Set up environments and procedures to train ML on simulated data. In this case, pipe the video stream form Carla (for instance through the Carla-ros-bridge to ROS, other methods are of course also feasible)
• Train ML to detect common objects, in this case cars
• Evaluate the trained ML on live footage and other open-source training data.

For a successful thesis work, we believe that the applicants should have:

• Good understanding of machine learning, statistics and AI
• Good understanding of computer vision, its related topics and pitfalls
• General knowledge of software development, game development or ROS
• Problem-solving skills and an eagerness to learn new things.
