Description of the thesis proposal:

3D-printers are versatile machines able to produce more or less any plastic part in a rapid and cost-effective manner by stacking layers of molten plastic on top each other. However, it is only considered “rapid” relative to most common production and machining standards as the time it takes to 3D-print a part can span from anything between two minutes to two days depending on the part.

Because of this quite large timespan 3D-printers are often left unsupervised for long periods of time since it is not feasible to monitor a 3D-printer for several hours straight, especially when the modern 3D-printer has such high success rates. This results in a fire hazard when a machine with a working temperature of around 220 °C is left unsupervised for hours in areas that might be unsuitable for this kind of heat.

Usually a standard hobby grade 3D-printers can detect a faulty heating element, but it is not possible for it to detect fires or smoke. Another problem is the fact that a 3D-printer usually cannot detect if a print has failed mid-print. This means that the printer will go on with the printing process until it has run out of code to process resulting in a risk of physical damage to the machine, fire hazard and a waste of material.

An overview of the thesis work 

Your task will be to implement and evaluate a camera monitoring solution for a 3D-printer which can identify high risk situations and interact accordingly with the 3D-printer to avoid disaster. In essence this will be a system that can identify open flames and smoke as well as detecting if a print has failed or is failing. In these cases, the system should be able to intercept the 3D-printing process and abort it as well as notifying the owner of the 3D-printer.

We think the thesis will contain the following parts:

  • Finding a suitable platform and camera to base the system on
  • AI, Computer vision and machine learning to identify open flames, smoke, and the most common cases where a 3D-print will fail
  • Interacting with 3D-printer through G-Code and/or hardware.

Questions to be answered during the thesis work includes:

  • Is it possible with a camera monitoring solution to detect open flames, smoke, and failed/failing prints?
  • How fast can the system react in the listed cases and act accordingly?
  • How trustworthy is the algorithm and in what cases can a false positive be expected?
  • Is it possible to notify the owner in case of an emergency?
  • Is it possible to stream the video feed?
