Develop HIL testbench for autonomous ground drones and simulate the drone in software

Description of the thesis proposal:

HIL or Hardware-in-the-loop can help tremendously when developing software for embedded systems. You can for instance do software integration tests on a HIL-bench to test a car’s brake system without the car being present or assembled for that matter.

But communicating the concepts and advantages of a HIL-bench is hard without an actual thing to do the demonstrations, teaching, and actual testing on.

This thesis will focus on developing a HIL bench that emulates the hardware components, requirements, and features of an autonomous indoor ground-based drone.

The thesis will also explore the possibilities of using software simulated signals and environments to complement- and allow for the software development of an autonomous drone while the physical drone is not yet ready.

An overview of the thesis work would be:

• From requirements, develop an embedded multi system HIL bench to afford software development on vehicles that are not yet built
• Through simulation software emulate signals and feed these signals into the HIL bench
• Have the HIL bench respond to input from the simulation
• Have the outputs from the HIL bench actuate the simulated model.

For a successful thesis work, we believe that the applicants should have:

• An understanding of relevant software and hardware components
• Some experience from working with both hardware and software
• Experience with unreal engine 4, Carla, ROS, embedded programming, or game development.
