Kevin Andersson:

“To analyse real data was a great learning experience”

Kevin Andersson became interested in Syntronic when he studied technical physics at Chalmers University of Technology.

When the time came for him to write his master’s thesis, Kevin applied to one of our proposals. The positive experience made him apply to become a permanent member of our team.

“I have always loved problem-solving. A life without challenges – without problems – wouldn’t be interesting. I chose to study technical physics because I wanted to be challenged. At university, I developed an interest in data science, machine learning and AI. It is the technical aspects and the possibility of applying new techniques to old, real-life problems that interest me. Can we solve problems that no one has been able to solve before? That question is at the core of my passion for technology.

"We were given the chance to learn about advanced AI and machine-learning techniques."

When the time came for me to write my thesis, I was already familiar with Syntronic’s work. Syntronic had been active at my institution throughout my studies. I could see that the company worked on fun and interesting projects that involved cutting-edge technology. When I went on the website to read the thesis proposal, one of them struck me as particularly fascinating. It was about the identification of important functional brain networks, using explainability in graph convolutional networks. I applied together with a friend at my university, and we passed the selection.

"We were welcomed as a part of the team."

The most exciting part of the thesis experience was the opportunity to work with real data. Up until that point, I had merely worked on predesigned problems designed for university settings. To analyse real data was a great learning experience. It was exciting to explore the opportunities and limitations associated with working with real data. We were given the chance to learn about advanced AI and machine-learning techniques. It was interesting to see how such techniques can be applied and used in practice. In our case, we applied certain techniques to the process of identifying brain networks. The experience made me realize how useful these emerging techniques could become one day. I realized that they have the potential to make a difference and to improve people’s lives.

"Many of the engineers showed an interest in us."

It was great to get a deeper understanding of Syntronic’s work from an insider’s perspective. As thesis writers, we were welcomed as a part of the team at Syntronic’s Gothenburg office. Many of the engineers showed an interest in us and in the progress of our project. I found that Syntronic Gothenburg has a nice mix of people and a great working environment.

When I responded to a job advertisement posted on Syntronic’s website, the company already knew me, and I already knew them, which was positive for everyone involved. Today, I continue to pursue my passion of developing advanced technology as an employed team member at Syntronic.”
